More info

Affectionate and engaging, yet almost shy, Puyméras makes a deft impression with its lively, sincere wines.

Hopping back and forth between Drôme and Vaucluse, the Puyméras wine-growing area extends over five different communes: Faucon, Puyméras itself, Saint Romain, Mérindol-les-Oliviers and Mollans-sur-Ouvèze. It gained appellation status as recently as 2005.

The vineyards are laid out in series of gentle valleys, climbing in places to 400 metres. Most of the vines are planted on ancient terraces in red sandy soils full of stones, though some grow on sandy slopes held together by a matrix of clay.

Grenache, the region’s leading grape variety, is predominant, rubbing shoulders with lavender, olives trees and the fragrant vegetation of the garrigue.

The grapes benefit from the cooler climate determined by neighbouring Mont Ventoux. This alchemy produces red wines with aromas of red berry fruits, thyme and rosemary. Enhanced by the cool growing conditions, their flavours linger pleasantly on the palate. A terroir worth exploring if you enjoy making new discoveries.

Grape Varieties

The Côtes du Rhône Villages Puyméras AOC applies only to still red wines. Grape blends must include a minimum of 50% Grenache noir and at least 20% Syrah and/or Mourvèdre. Other permitted varieties may not account for more than 20% of the mix. The minimum alcohol content is 12.5%.
These red wines have a peachy or apricot flavour in their early years, developing leather and truffle notes over time. They keep well and can be aged for more than ten years.

History

This territory, drained by the Ouvèze and Lauzon rivers, has been settled since the end of the Upper Palaeolithic Era (Old Stone Age), more than 10,000 years ago. There are also traces of the Roman colonisation (cremation tombs, stelae…), the most significant artefact being a statue dedicated to Jupiter Delpulsorius unearthed at Saint-Romain-en-Viennois.
In medieval times, viticulture was developed by monks from Isle-Barbe (Lyon) and the Abbey of Cluny. Formerly a land of orchards, only the vineyards survived the great frost of 1956. A few olive and fruit trees, swamped among the vines, remain to bear witness to this earlier agricultural activity.
Granted Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC status in 1979, the vineyards were accorded the full Côtes du Rhône Villages Puyméras appellation in 2005.

Geography

The vineyards extend over several very undulating communes at altitudes of between 220 and 600 metres. The communes concerned are Mérindol les Oliviers and Mollans sur Ouvèze, in the Drôme, and Faucon, St Romain en Viennois and Puyméras, in the Vaucluse.

Climate

Mediterranean type but cooler, influenced by the presence of Mont Ventoux, which rises to a height of 1,912 metres.

Soils

The terroir consists of stony terraces composed of rolled pebbles and angular shale, covered with fine red shingly soil.
