More info

Located on the Plan de Dieu, between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, the Domaine Martin estate dates back to 1905 when Julien Martin bought 5 hectares of vineyards. In 1947 his son, Jules, took over, buying parcels of vines, building the facilities to make wine on the property and overseeing production. Today the estate comprises 67 hectares of prime winegrowing land and is run by David and Eric, the great grandsons of its founder.

The vineyard comprises 50 hectares of AOC status while 8 produce Vin de Pays. It is planted with red varieties Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, as well as the white grapes Clairette, Bourboulenc and Grenache blanc.

In the Middle Ages, when crossing this vast, bandit-infested “forest “of scrubland, you were taking your life in your hands. All you could do was commit your soul to God. Maybe this is the origin of the name Plan de Dieu (God’s Plain).

Since those days, the area has been planted with vines and there are only a few remaining patches of woodland. The vines grow on a bed of red clay packed to a depth of 10 metres with a mass of smooth-rolled pebbles. Given this stony foundation, the skimpy soils yield little: barely enough grapes to produce one bottle of wine per vinestock!

From April to November, the sun beat down the vine and at night, the warmth rise from the stony mattress. From this terroir, they produce wines that are high in colour, dense and concentrated. The nose is reminiscent of the surrounding garrigue (scrubland), with scents of thyme and bay laurel.

The harvest is done manually. The grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and fermented in concrete vats. Traditional vinification with daily pigeage. The maceration times vary between 7 to 25 days. Rosé wines are obtained from bleeding and white by direct pressing. Aged in oak barrels 12 to 36 months before bottling, unfiltered, guaranteeing the quality and respect of the product.
