In 2001, after working for more than 25 years as cellar master of Chateau de La Grille in Chinon, Jean-Max Manceau and his wife Odile, bought the Domaine de Noire, located at a place ranked "Premieres Côtes de Chinon" in the early twentieth century, and did everything possible to restore the vineyard to its original fame.
Today, the Domaine de Noire is certified organic and follow biodynamic farming methods. It is a choice, a commitment, a way of living the vine with respect and convictions. The Domaine de Noire also has been recognized with the ‘Tourist Wine Cellar of Excellence’ label for the quality of its service.
The Domaine de Noiré estate is located in the center of Loire Valley, in the town of Chinon, made famous by illustrious characters such as Joan of Arc and the french philosopher Francois Rabelais.
The vines, some of which are over 50 years old, cover more than 14 hectares. The estate is composed mostly of the grape "Cabernet franc". This grape cultivated for over 1,000 years is mentioned in many books under the name "Breton".
The Domaine de Noire produces 3 different red wines from the 3 different soil types of Chinon AOP:
- Sandy-clay soil on the south-facing hilltops. This area, covered with flints, retains heat during the daytime and keeps the vines warm at night. This gives a fruity red wine, "Thirst for Tenderness".
- Gravelly soil that drain easily and must be handled carefully, with a sub-soil of clay, which roots can easily reach, limiting any water stress, gives birth to a balanced wine "Elegance".
- The other soil, chalky limestone, the famous Loire Valley "tuffeau" is a porous stone that suits vines perfectly. It has a great potential, and the vines thrive in it. When the yield is carefully controlled the grapes have a very full flavour, hence the name "Caractere".
Jean-Max and Odile philosophy is to offer wines of high expression, faithful of where they were born. Their wines each have finesse, elegance and character. Simply put, they are just delicious!
