What is the state of the world vitiviniculture today?

Which countries are the top 10 largest wine producers, wine importers, wine exporters, and wine consumers?

Here is a summary of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) 2019 statistical report based on 2018 harvest.

In 2018, there were 4.23 million hectares of vines dedicated to wine production (excluding table grape and dried grape production).

The world production of wine grape was 44.34 million tons, equivalent to 292 million hectolitres, which is equivalent to 36.5 billion bottles. (Average vine yield = 10.5 tons, or 69 hectolitres per hectare. 1.5 kg of grape = 1 litre of wine.)

Italy, France and Spain represent collectively 50% of the world wine production. Of course, they are also the 3 largest wine exporters.

wine producers

World wine trade increased steadily during the period 2014-2018, +3% in volume and +23% in value, driven by the excellent performance of sparkling wine +30% over the previous 5 years.

World wine trade in 2018 represented a volume of wine equivalent to 13.5 billion bottles with a value of 31.4 billion Euros (average price = Euros 2.32 per bottle). About a third of the volume of wine is sold in bulk.

Spain is the largest exporter of wine in volume (2.63 billion equivalent bottles at Euro 1.37).

France is the largest exporter of wine in value (1.76 billion equivalent bottles at Euro 6.59).

France export more wine in value than the USA, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand altogether.

Italy occupies the second place both in volume and value (2.46 billion equivalent bottles at Euro 2.48).

Wine Exporter

Unsurprisingly, countries with high purchasing power and relatively small wine productions are the largest wine importers.

Germany, the United Kingdom and USA are the 3 largest wine importer in volume (equivalent to 6.8 billion bottles).

The USA, UK and Germany are also the 3 largest wine importer in value (11.2 billion Euros).

France imports a fair amount of bulk wine to satisfy its domestic market, mostly entry level wine from Spain.

The world consumption of wine in 2018 was 246 million hectolitres, equivalent to 30.75 billion bottles (75cl). +2% over the same 5 years.

With a population of 330 million, the USA is the world largest wine market in volume, ahead of France and Italy.

However, on a per capita basis, French people are the world largest wine consumers, as they drink 4 times more wine than US citizens on average.
