Chateau Pey de Pont is a vineyard in the Médoc which exists since the 1850s and was already mentioned in the first edition of the famous guide Cook and Feret. In 1874, the production was of 90 barrels, and in 1932 the Chateau became a CruBourgeois.
After WWII, Jean Reich bought the estate which consisted then of 12 hectares. He enhanced and enlarged the vineyard while delivering its production to a cooperative winery. His son Henri continued the work begun by his father. It was only in 1997 that Henri’s children Laurent and Olivier decided to fly on their own. They begin to make wine and sell their own bottles.
Today, after the efforts of three generations, Chateau Pey de Pont owns 36 hectares with a total production of about 240,000 bottles (average yield 53hl/ha).
The 36 hectares used to develop this Cru Bourgeois are spread over two municipalities. First there is 17 hectares in Bégadan, a sandy-gravelly soil, with vines over 30 years. Then there is 19 hectares of young vines on Civrac-en-Médoc, with clay-limestone soils.
The vineyards are planted with about 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. After harvesting, sorting and careful vinification in stainless steel tanks of 170hl, aging takes place in French oak barrels for 12 months.
This results in a Médoc on roasted notes, brioche and ripe fruit, with a rich, full palate, fleshy and good length. To drink between 5 and 10 years depending on the vintage.
