More info

Gabriel-Pagin Fils estate is located in Avenay Val d'Or, a village located at the heart of the Champagne region, in the Natural Regional Park of the Mountain of Reims, between Reims and Epernay.

3 generations of récoltants-manipulants (RM), Champagne producers who only harvest and vinify the grapes growing on their property (while the négociants-manipulants (NM) are sourcing grapes from the entire region), have been perpetuating the family tradition from father to son since 1946.

Gabriel Pagin Fils vineyards cover 9.5 hectares and are classified as "Premier Cru" and "Grand Cru":

  • the "Premier Cru" of the Great Valley of the Marne, in Avenay Val d'Or and Mutigny,
  • the "Grand Cru" of Côte des Blancs in Avize and Cramant.

It is divided into several small pieces of land. Each of them has its own specificity which are expressed during the production process of their champagnes.

Pinot noir is grown on 80% of the area. Pinot Noir produces structured Champagne; it also gives them body and pungency.

Chardonnay grows on 18% of their vineyards located on the Côte des Blancs slopes. It offers delicate citrus and floral aromas, and gives great finesse to their Champagne.

Pinot Meunier is present only on 2% of the surface. Characterized by its fruity flavour and intense bouquet, it adds suppleness and roundness to the wines.

Historically, the village of Avenay Val d'Or grew around the site once occupied by the Royal Abbey of Saint Pierre, founded around 660 by Saint Bertha, the daughter of a Count at the Palace of Clovis II, King of France. The wine of Avenay Val d'Or was often served at royal dinners. Henry IV had a fondness for it.

The territory of Avenay Val d'Or produces wines displaying great finesse and a delicate bouquet, thanks to its rich terroir and ideal location:

  • a cool climate tempered by the oceanic influence,
  • a calcareous substrate favoring natural drainage of the ground,
  • vineyards planted on south facing slopes with an optimal amount of sunshine.

The vines are about 30 years old on average.

Grower Champagne (RM) are small, artisanal, independent winegrowers. They make Champagne from the grapes growing on their land, in small batches. Each of their Champagne have a distinctive personality and unique characteristics. They tend to focus on the domestic market to sell a few tens of thousand bottles and don't do much marketing and promotions. They are not very well known from the public and yet, Grower Champagne are much better value for money than the big brands. You only pay for what is in the bottle.

The Grandes Maisons (NM) are owned by multinational companies and source tons of grapes from the entire region to produce Champagne on an industrial scale. They want volume and consistency to supply tens of millions of bottles all around the world. Standardized Champagne don't offer much in terms of colors and flavors and because they rely heavily on advertising and promotions to sell all their production, they tend to be more expensive than Grower Champagne.

We just love Grower Champagne's authenticity. You should try it and taste the difference, cheers!
